B.O.G.O.F. (‘buy one [head], get one free’): a giant double-headed modern Godzilla bootleg from China

I hope not to shock devoted readers by a non vintage offering (here in an example in the collection of my friend and fellow devoted kaiju hunter, Jamie Francis: see Facebook and Instagram). However, this bicephalic Godzilla bootleg has so much charm that it is hard to ignore – even for a dyed-in-the-wool vintage lover like myself, and as it is so often mistaken for a vintage one in online posts it deserves a mention here for documentation purposes at least.

In the form of the body and heads, and the presence of four toes, it is recognisably a descendant of the large Imperial Godzilla, albeit at some remove and perhaps via a bootleg or two as intermediate models. It stands 310mm. tall and weighs 393g., and is made of that soft plastic foam with a harder rubberised exterior used for so many cheap Chinese dinosaurs and monsters in the last couple of decades. Like many of those an air in- and out-take valve has been set into the stomach area within a large oval, but otherwise it seems to have been made in a single cast. It is marked “MADE IN CHINA” beneath the base of the tail, but has no marks on the soles of its feet. I know of only a few of these, with two passing through Italian Vinted in the last six months, and another shown in a Godzilla group portrait on Instagram by a Netherlandish poster named ‘Cousin_Muscles’, on 12 April 2026:

And another Instragramer from Poland, named ‘Made_by_Kulo’, posted another example in May 2022, in a fetching blue alternative colour spray:

There is also a Youtube video by an Italian poster there named ‘Mister Fantasy RelaX’, which shows one.

The present one came to light in Romania, and to that scatter-gun global distribution we should add the personal recollection of Jamie Francis, who remembers first seeing these for sale in the UK as new toys a decade or so ago, alongside a series of dragon toys, such as the double-headed dragon posted on Instagram by ‘aormen2’ on 10 February 2024. All this gives us the wide geographical distribution we should expect from a mass-produced Chinese toy, but perhaps with a focus on Europe rather than the US.

He is a handsome beast in a roaring rubbery fashion, and apparently somewhat rare – standing out from the recent rubber herd of slightly clumsy and overinflated Chinese dinosaurs and dragons.

Only one other modern bootleg jumps out at me as relevant to mention here – and one I know only from a single European sale listing: a bootleg of the kaiju, Red King (initially from episode 8 of Ultraman from 1966, and the subject of many sofubi, with a Bandai model produced in 1991). That was made in the same material, and despite being a little smaller, is notably similar to our double-headed Godzilla, differing only in the ‘roarer’ mounted in a hidden from view, but somewhat uncomfortable looking place – if you have got to roar from somewhere then I suppose that site is as good as any, but it does make your eyes water thinking about it.

⁂⁂⁂

I wonder if some Chinese manufacturer (or manufacturers), in the ‘arms race’ to stay ahead of the next inexpensive monster toy, produced this two headed Godzilla and also occasionally dipped into Ultraman kaiju for inspiration. I should love to hear of any others that readers may own.
